Paola Giometti is from São Paulo, Brazil. She studied Biology, gained a Master’s degree and is now studying for a PhD in Natural Sciences. Furthermore, she’s the author of three books and has organised and worked collaboratively on several collections of short stories. The Destiny of the Wolves is her second solo book and was released by Giz Editorial in 2014. Together with The Code of the Eagles and The Call of the Bison, it makes up the Tales of the Earth series, in which the author combines both her academic and real-life experiences to portray nature as accurately as possible.

In The Destiny of the Wolves, we’re taken back to a time when Man has not yet built civilization as we know it. The story is told from the perspective of a pack of wolves, who fight for survival in an inhospitable world that is full of dangers. One of these dangers is Man himself, who also lives in packs and does what he has to for his tribe. Then Kushi, the leader of the wolf pack, has a vision of her ancestors. They show her a future that had until then seemed unimaginable: a union between men and wolves. Now she and her friends must set out on a perilous journey through snowy mountains in search of the answers that will help to decide the destiny of the wolves.

Portuguese Version of the Book

That’s basically the synopsis of this book, which is easy to read and share. It’s ideal for young readers as the story is told in simple language, but is very captivating and makes you curious to find out what’s going to happen next. The author chooses her words very carefully, including the character’s names and the features of nature that she describes as the tale unfolds. Most readers will not be familiar with certain plants and animals mentioned, but these are well used and explained in the plot.

Here at Minas Nerds, we always underline our commitment to promoting and valuing women who do an incredible job, often without any support. We can say that Paola Giometti is one of those women, who, as well as being very competent, has an emotional sensibility that can be seen in her works. The Destiny of the Wolves focuses on friendship, companionship, perseverance and strength, in a narrative that demonstrates true love for animals and the connections we build with them. It would definitely make a great present for youngsters who are becoming interested in reading and science.
